Oklahoma’s Excise Tax and Sales Tax, Explained
Oklahoma doesn’t charge a standard sales tax on vehicles. Instead it charges two separate taxes at the title transfer: a 3.25% excise tax and a 1.25% motor vehicle sales tax, for a combined 4.5%.
On a new vehicle, both apply to the full purchase price. On a used vehicle, the first $1,500 of the price is taxed at a flat $20, and everything above that is taxed at the combined 4.5% rate.
Since July 1, 2026, under House Bill 1183, this tax is based on the vehicle’s actual sale price, not a published value guide — so what you actually paid is what matters, not a book estimate.
Trade-In and Rebate Credits
If you trade in a vehicle or get a manufacturer rebate, Oklahoma subtracts that from the taxable price before calculating tax — Senate Bill 1619 made this the law starting November 1, 2020. Trade in a $10,000 car against a $30,000 purchase, and you’re only taxed on $20,000, not $30,000. This calculator applies that credit automatically. (A few older calculators online still say trade-in doesn’t reduce your taxable amount — that hasn’t been true since 2020.)
Registration (Tag) Fees by Vehicle Age
Unlike most states, Oklahoma’s annual registration fee drops as your vehicle ages:
| Registration year | Annual fee |
|---|---|
| Year 1-4 | $96 |
| Year 5-8 | $86 |
| Year 9-12 | $66 |
| Year 13-16 | $46 |
| Year 17+ | $26 |
A brand-new vehicle always starts at the Year 1-4 rate. This fee is charged every year, whether you’re titling the vehicle for the first time or simply renewing.
Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Fees
Oklahoma adds a yearly supplemental fee for EVs and plug-in hybrids, on top of the standard registration fee, under the state’s DRIVE Act (68 O.S. § 6511):
- Electric vehicles: $110/year
- Plug-in hybrids: $82/year
- Regular hybrids (non plug-in): no extra fee
This applies every year, including renewals, since it funds road maintenance the way gas tax does for other vehicles.
Tire Recycling Fee
Oklahoma charges a $2.90-per-tire recycling fee, but only the first time a vehicle is titled or registered in the state — not on renewals. For a typical 4-tire passenger vehicle, that’s $11.60, added once at purchase or when bringing a vehicle in from another state.
Buying vs Renewing: What’s Actually Different
Titling a vehicle for the first time in Oklahoma means paying excise tax, sales tax, an $11 title fee, the tire recycling fee, and that year’s registration fee. Renewing an existing registration skips all of that — you only pay the registration fee for your vehicle’s age tier, plus the EV/PHEV fee if it applies. That’s why the numbers people search for (“tag calculator” vs “tag renewal calculator”) can look so different: they’re really two different transactions.
Exemptions and Special Cases
A few situations skip the excise tax entirely. Family transfers — between spouses, or between parent and child — are exempt using Form 794, as long as the vehicle is gifted, not sold. 100% disabled veterans get one excise-tax-exempt purchase every three years, with proof of their VA disability letter or DAV card. These exemptions apply to the tax only; title and registration fees still apply.
FAQs
How much does it cost to tag a car in Oklahoma?
For a first-time title on a used car, expect the $20-plus-4.5% excise/sales tax, an $11 title fee, $11.60 in tire fees, and $26-$96 in registration depending on the vehicle’s age. Renewing an existing tag only costs the registration fee.
Does trade-in value reduce my Oklahoma vehicle tax?
Yes. Since a 2020 law (SB 1619), your trade-in value and any manufacturer rebate are subtracted from the price before tax is calculated.
Do electric cars pay extra fees in Oklahoma?
Yes. EVs pay a $110/year road fee and plug-in hybrids pay $82/year, in addition to the normal registration fee. Regular (non plug-in) hybrids don’t pay this extra fee.
Why does Oklahoma’s registration fee go down every few years?
Oklahoma prices registration by vehicle age instead of a flat rate. It starts at $96/year for the first four years and drops in tiers, down to $26/year once a vehicle passes 17 years old.
Is the tire recycling fee charged every year?
No. It’s a one-time $2.90-per-tire fee charged only when a vehicle is first titled or registered in Oklahoma, not on renewals.
Do I owe tax on a gifted car in Oklahoma?
Not if it’s a genuine gift between spouses, or between a parent and child, using Form 794. A sale between family members at a reduced price still owes tax on that price.
Buying a Car in Oklahoma?
If you’re financing the purchase, the car payment calculator shows your real monthly payment once tax and fees are included. And before you commit, check what car insurance might run you — it varies more than most buyers expect.
